Yuri Gagarin before a space flight aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft. April 12, 1961.
Vostok 1 was the first spaceflight of the Vostok programme and the first human spaceflight in history. The Vostok 3KA space capsule was launched on April 12, 1961 from Baikonur Cosmodrome with Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, making him the first human to cross into outer space.
But other than that, we must not forget about the man who devoted his life to achieve this great goal — the chief designer Sergei Korolyov, the rocket genius behind Yuri Gagarin.
This great man has created practical cosmonautics. Under his leadership was created and launched the first artificial Earth satellite, and a few years later he designed and organized the launch of the first man into outer space — the event, which we are celebrating today.
